Visual Arts

The visual arts are a flourishing part of the Saint George’s environment. Lower School hallway walls are covered with students’ colorful drawings, paintings, collages, and weavings that grab your attention. The same is true for the Middle School’s walls, where you can find 3-D paper creations, bold drawings, and art projects that express each students’ personality. In the Upper School Art Gallery, view the latest exhibit of student works or guest showings from our artistic alumni and faculty.

All of this creativity begins with our faculty and our outstanding art facilities. The Lower School’s spacious new Arts Building is packed with traditional and unique supplies and busy with students exploring different cultural and natural subjects. The fifth graders research 19th Century artists, paint copies of their masterpieces, then dress up in costume – top hats, overcoats, and even beards – to re-enact the Paris Salon of 1874 in the Davenport House’s refined atmosphere.

Middle and Upper School students expand their intuition, imagination and dexterity in the expansive art, photography, and pottery studios of the Fred and Claire Gilbert Art Complex. Students also sharpen their artistic and analytical skills in studio art and film classes, expressing themselves through detailed sketches and moving videos. IB Visual Arts students prepare individual art exhibitions as seniors that sometimes take over entire rooms. The results of all this activity brighten Saint George’s walls and are mirrored in the growing confidence and ability of our students.

Creating artwork is often a private endeavor, but at Saint George’s the best artwork doesn’t stay private for long. Our Art Gallery, centrally located between the Upper School courtyard and Founders Theater, shares the hard work and personal vision of our students, teachers and alumni with the entire community.
